Free Heart Health Screening Camp

Most heart disease is found late. It builds quietly for years, and the first clear sign is often the one that brings somebody to an emergency room. This camp exists to move that moment earlier: a short set of checks, done free, with a cardiologist to tell you what the numbers mean. No appointment is needed and nothing is charged on the day.

What the screening covers

Every attender gets the same set of checks. They take about forty-five minutes end to end, most of which is waiting rather than testing. - Blood pressure, measured twice with a rest in between - ECG - a twelve-lead recording of the heart's electrical activity - Random blood sugar, from a finger prick - Total cholesterol, from the same sample - Height, weight and waist measurement - A consultation with a cardiologist to go through the results The consultation is the part that matters. A number on a printout tells you very little on its own; what it means for you depends on your age, your history and the rest of the results.

Who should come

The camp is open to any adult, and no referral is needed. It is most worth the morning if you recognise yourself in any of these: - You are over 40 and have not had your heart checked - Someone in your immediate family had heart disease before 60 - You have diabetes, high blood pressure or raised cholesterol - You smoke or use tobacco in any form - You have put on noticeable weight, or become much less active - You have noticed breathlessness or tiredness doing things that used to be easy South Asians tend to develop coronary artery disease earlier, and at lower body weights, than many other populations. Being slim and in your forties is not a reason to skip a screening.

How to prepare

Nothing complicated, but two of these make a real difference to how useful your results are. - Come fasting if you can - four hours without food gives a more reliable sugar and cholesterol reading. Water is fine. - Take your regular medication as normal. Do not skip a dose for the camp. - Bring a list of what you take, or the boxes themselves. - Bring any previous reports, particularly earlier ECGs or blood results. - Wear something loose. The ECG needs access to your chest, wrists and ankles. If you cannot come fasting, still come. A non-fasting reading is less precise but far better than not being tested.

How the morning runs

Registration opens at 9:00 AM at the main reception and closes at 1:00 PM, an hour before the camp ends, so that everybody who registers is seen. You will be registered, sent for the measurements and the blood test, then for the ECG, and finally to a cardiologist with all of it in hand. Expect around forty-five minutes in total on a quiet morning and rather longer in the middle of the day. Coming early is the shortest queue.

What happens after

You leave with your results and a written note of what they mean. Where nothing needs following up - which is the most common outcome - you will be told when to have the checks repeated. Where something does need looking at, the cardiologist will explain what and why, and you can book a follow-up appointment at the desk before you leave. Any further tests or treatment are charged at the hospital's usual rates; nothing is charged for the camp itself.

Please read before attending

A screening camp is not a diagnosis. These checks are designed to find risk factors in people who feel well - they are not a substitute for seeing a doctor about a symptom you already have. If you are having chest pain, pressure or tightness, breathlessness at rest, or pain spreading to your arm or jaw, do not wait for the camp. Call 108 for an ambulance, or come to the emergency department now.

Registering

You can walk in on the day - no booking is required and there is no charge. If you would prefer a slot, or you are bringing a group from a workplace or residents' association, contact the hospital in advance and we will arrange a time.
