Your health. Our priority.

Breathlessness is treated badly when it is treated on impression. Measuring lung function is what changes that.

  • Spirometry at diagnosis, so asthma and COPD are distinguished rather than guessed at
  • Inhaler technique checked at every visit, because most treatment failure is technique rather than the drug
  • A persistent cough investigated, since three weeks is the point at which it stops being ordinary
  • Sleep apnoea taken seriously, which affects blood pressure, sugar control and road safety

Questions, answered.

Common questions about pulmonology care at Humayun Hospital.

How long should a cough last before I see someone?

Three weeks. Most coughs after a viral infection settle within that. Beyond three weeks, or with blood, weight loss or fever, it needs a chest X-ray and an examination.

Is asthma curable?

It is controllable rather than curable. Most people with well-managed asthma have no symptoms and no restriction on activity. Control depends on the right inhaler used the right way.

I have been given an inhaler but it does not help.

Bring it to your appointment. Inhaler technique is the commonest reason treatment fails, and it takes two minutes to check. The drug is often fine.

Does snoring need treatment?

Snoring with daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or pauses in breathing that a partner has noticed should be assessed. Untreated sleep apnoea raises blood pressure and worsens diabetes.
