About Hernia Repair

A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak point in the abdominal wall. Repair restores the wall, usually reinforcing it with a mesh. Depending on the type, size and your general health, the surgeon will recommend either a laparoscopic or an open approach.

Before you read on

Everything here is general information about hernia repair. Whether it suits you, and how it would be done in your case, is a decision for your doctor after examining you.

Your consultant's instructions always take precedence over anything written on this page.

When is it recommended?

Situations in which a doctor may suggest hernia repair.

  • A visible bulge in the groin or abdomen

Before you decide

Common questions about hernia repair.

Can a hernia be treated without surgery?

Hernias do not resolve on their own. Whether surgery is needed straight away depends on symptoms and risk, which your surgeon will discuss.

What is the mesh used for?

Mesh reinforces the repaired area of the abdominal wall and is widely used to reduce the chance of the hernia returning.
