Minor Head & Neck Procedures
Most neck lumps turn out to be benign, but all of them deserve examination and usually an ultrasound. Where tissue is needed for a diagnosis, a needle sample or small biopsy is often all it takes, and most of these procedures are done as day cases.
- Most neck lumps are benign
- Ultrasound and needle sampling first
- Day-care in most cases

About Minor Head & Neck Procedures
Assessment begins with examination and an endoscopic look at the throat, because a neck lump can be the first sign of a problem elsewhere. Ultrasound and a fine needle sample follow, which give a diagnosis in most cases without surgery. Where excision is needed, it is usually a short day-care procedure.
- The throat is examined too, since a neck lump can be secondary
- Fine needle sampling gives a diagnosis in most cases
- A lump present more than three weeks should not be watched further
- Most procedures are day cases under local or short general anaesthesia

Procedure details
The usual sequence, from first consultation through to follow-up.
Assessment
Examination of the neck and an endoscopic look at the throat, since a neck lump can be the first sign of something elsewhere.
Imaging and sampling
Ultrasound, usually with a fine needle sample taken at the same time, which gives a diagnosis in most cases.
Procedure
Where excision or drainage is needed, it is done as a day case under local or short general anaesthesia.
Results
Histopathology is reported on site, and results are explained at a follow-up appointment with a plan.
How to prepare
What to sort out before you come in.
- Note how long the lump has been present and whether it has changed
- Note any associated symptoms: hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, weight loss or night sweats
- Bring any previous scans or biopsy reports
- Fasting is required if general anaesthesia is planned
- Tell the team about blood thinners

Recovery
What to expect afterwards, and roughly when.
- Most patients go home the same day
- Keep the wound dry for a few days as instructed
- Mild swelling and bruising for a week is normal
- Results usually take about a week and are explained at follow-up
- Report increasing redness, swelling, discharge or fever
Why choose Humayun for neck lumps and minor procedures
