Endometriosis Management

Endometriosis takes years to diagnose in most women, largely because severe period pain is so often dismissed as normal. It is common, it is treatable, and the delay costs women years of pain and sometimes fertility.

  • Pain that stops your life is not normal
  • Diagnosis often needs laparoscopy
  • Medical treatment first for most
  • Fertility considered from the start

About Endometriosis Management

Endometrial-like tissue growing outside the uterus causes pain, scarring and sometimes infertility. Ultrasound frequently appears normal, which is why diagnosis is often delayed and why laparoscopy remains important. Treatment is long term: medication to suppress the disease, surgery to excise deposits, and fertility planning where that matters, often all three over years.

  • A normal ultrasound does not exclude endometriosis
  • Diagnosis is frequently delayed by several years
  • Treatment is long term rather than a single intervention
  • Excision at surgery is generally preferred to ablation

Before you read on

Everything here is general information about endometriosis management. Whether it suits you, and how it would be done in your case, is a decision for your doctor after examining you.

Your consultant's instructions always take precedence over anything written on this page.

When is it recommended?

Situations in which a doctor may suggest endometriosis management.

  • Severe period pain interfering with daily life
  • Pelvic pain between periods
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Difficulty conceiving with painful periods
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination during periods
  • Known endometriosis needing ongoing management

Procedure details

The usual sequence, from first consultation through to follow-up.

01

Assessment

A detailed pain history, examination and ultrasound, which may be normal even where endometriosis is present.

02

Medical treatment

Hormonal treatment to suppress the disease and pain relief, tried first for most women and effective for many.

03

Laparoscopy

Where symptoms persist or fertility is affected, laparoscopy confirms the diagnosis and treats deposits in the same sitting.

04

Long-term plan

Ongoing medical treatment to prevent recurrence, with fertility planning where pregnancy is wanted.

How to prepare

What to sort out before you come in.

  • Keep a pain diary across two or three cycles, noting severity and what it prevents
  • Note pain with intercourse, bowel movements or urination, which are diagnostically useful
  • Be clear about your fertility plans, as they change the treatment order
  • Bring previous scans and any treatments already tried
  • Bring a list of pain relief used and how well it works

Recovery

What to expect afterwards, and roughly when.

  • Medical treatment usually shows benefit over two to three months
  • After laparoscopic excision, most women return to work within one to two weeks
  • Pain often improves substantially after surgery but can recur without medical treatment
  • Fertility treatment may be recommended sooner rather than later after surgery
  • Long-term follow-up is arranged, as this is a chronic condition

Why choose Humayun for endometriosis

Endometriosis is diagnosed late because pain is dismissed, and every year of delay costs.

  • Severe period pain taken seriously rather than treated as something to endure
  • Laparoscopy offered where symptoms persist despite a normal scan
  • Excision preferred to ablation, since it treats disease below the surface
  • Fertility considered from the first consultation rather than after years of pain treatment

Before you decide

Common questions about endometriosis management.

My scan was normal. Can I still have endometriosis?

Yes, and frequently. Ultrasound shows cysts and deeper disease but often misses superficial deposits entirely. A normal scan does not exclude it.

Is severe period pain normal?

No. Discomfort is common; pain that stops you working, studying or functioning is not, and it is the commonest reason endometriosis goes undiagnosed for years.

Will surgery cure it?

Surgery removes what is present and usually improves pain considerably, but the condition can recur. Medical treatment afterwards reduces that, and the two work together.

Does endometriosis always cause infertility?

No. Many women with endometriosis conceive without difficulty. Where it does affect fertility, treatment options exist and are best discussed early rather than after years of trying.
